A Wrecking Ball

Back in the day when buildings were set for demolition, cranes would be sent in and use large heavy concrete wrecking balls to demolish them.  This was accomplished by swinging the crane boom back and forth to get the ball swinging, and it would ultimately be swung into the side of the building causing serious destruction.  I suppose they are still used, though more often we might see controlled explosion demolitions these days.  The wrecking balls always intrigued me however.  The destruction  that just one hit could incur was nasty.

There have been times in my life where I felt as if I had been hit by a wrecking ball.  Ever feel that way?  Perhaps from an unexpected divorce, or worse yet finding out your partner had not been faithful.  Or maybe by the death of a family member or loved one.  Maybe even from something you had done, something that was so gravely seriously wrong that you would never want anyone to know about it.  Or even perhaps the devastating news of a terminal illness in a family member or some close friend.  Any of these, and more, could easily make me feel as if I had been hit by a wrecking ball.

When buildings are demolished by the wrecking balls, it is a process.  The step after the use of the wrecking ball is when they come in and pick up the pieces, some of which, may be restored for use again.  When we are hit by lifes wrecking balls, we really have only one logical choice.  To pick up the pieces, and aim for restoration.  How we pick up those pieces and what we do with them says a lot about our character.  At the very top of the list is to trust God, and never doubt his reason(s) for the wrecking ball.

The story of Job is all about wrecking balls, and can provide us with an excellent slant on living with wrecking balls.
